Dental Implants

Ideally, we will keep our teeth our entire life. Although more today are able to keep their natural teeth because of improved dental care, there are still plenty of Americans who face the loss of one or more teeth.

When tooth loss happens, most people immediately think about dentures for tooth replacement. While dentures can provide a satisfactory tooth replacement for many people, the best choice for tooth replacement and the one that provides an experience closest to your natural teeth is dental implants.

If you are one of the many millions of people in this country who are living with missing teeth,  Dr. Jason Luecht a call. Find out how dental implants can change your life!

Dental Implants Are Most Like Your Natural Teeth

Although nothing is as good as your natural teeth, dental implants come pretty close. These permanent structures are surgically placed into the jawbone where a tooth is missing, replacing the once-present tooth root. A dental crown is then placed on top of the implant to complete the replacement tooth.

Because dental implants integrate into your jawbone, they do not move or shift the way dentures do. Denture-wearers often find that some foods are difficult to eat because of this, but implant patients do not have these issues. They can chew all of their favorite foods comfortably.

Many denture-wearers are self-conscious about their dentures because the appliance can move or make clicking noises when they speak or laugh. These problems are nonexistent for dental implant patients.

Implant-Supported Dentures

One of the reasons patients with missing teeth still opt for dentures is because they are more affordable. With implant-supported dentures, they can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Implant-supported dentures provide a way to keep dentures immobile in the mouth. For full uppers and lowers, usually four implants are placed into the jawbone. The dentures are attached to these implants, keeping them firmly in place.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best option for replacing missing teeth for many reasons.

  1. Dental implants are considered the tooth replacement that is closest to your natural teeth. Patients are able to chew, eat, and laugh without worry of shifting or moving.
  2. Dental implants are permanently secured into the jawbone, so they continue to stimulate the bone. This prevents a problem that denture-wearers eventually experience, called facial collapse. When there are no tooth roots to stimulate the jawbone, the body is signaled to cease sending nutrients to the area, resulting in bone shrinkage. People develop a sunken-in look that can make them look older than they are. Dental implants alleviate this problem.
  3. Dental implants can last a lifetime if they are cared for properly, so they are a long-term solution to missing teeth. No periodic adjustments are needed as is the case for dentures.

Caring for Dental Implants

Taking care of your dental implants is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brush and floss regularly, and visit the dentist twice each year for examinations and cleanings. Dental implants don’t develop decay like your natural teeth do, but trips to the dentist are important to protect your gums. This, in turn, will protect your implants.
